Does

Here are our does, the lovely ladies of our herd. Most of them are quite lady-like; we pride ourselves on raising well-mannered goats. The pictures are all from 2010, and we need to get newer pictures for all. Hopefully we can get some taken in late spring. They are listed in the order of acquisition, which also generally corresponds to their ages.
Happy Tailz SSZ Aibhilin
OLK Brennagh
Happy Tailz TW A Caoilainn
Oreo (non-registered)
Irish Whisper PPS Deirdre
Hetrick IND B Endellion

They are registered with NDGA and AGS, and most of them are also with ADGA. We are fond of Irish/Celtic culture and music, so goats that we are able to name will have Irish, Scottish, or Welsh names. We will put the English equivalents with pronunciation with them as well as needed.

Most of the pictures on this page are links to a larger form of the picture with better resolution. Click on the thumbnails for a larger view.

We are including the herd names as well: Aibhilin was born on Happy Tailz Farm, thus her full registered name is "Happy Tailz SS Z Aibhilin". The "SS" is the initials of her sire, the "Z" is the year code for 2009. Some, but not all of our goats follow the same pattern. The dam's initial may be used instead of the year code.

Our herd plans for the next several years (numbers do not include our non-registered doe, Oreo):

  • 2012 - increase to eight does (retain three kids)
  • 2013 - increase to ten does (retain one, buy one or retain two)
  • 2014 - increase to twelve does (retain two)
  • Happy Tailz SS Z Aibhilin

This is Aibhilin (pronounced Ah-veh-lin - rhymes with javelin), our oldest doe. She was born on 14 April 2009. She is staying very small, but she's a good milker. She can be a bit flighty now; she was very friendly after she was born, but had a personality change after her first kidding. She seems to be coming around now and hopefully the flightiness will be gone after kidding 2012. She is a decent milker; her teats are long but slender. Her flightiness mostly comes on the milk stand, but once one adjusts to her temperament there is little difficulty in getting her milked. We hope for more capacity in 2012, she's rarely over 3 cups a day.

We have not had great luck with her litters. We hope to retain a daughter from her in 2012.

2010 Pictures from left to right:

  • Full udder at twelve hours past last milking
  • Empty udder (post-milking)
  • Profile shot
  • Here is her pedigree:

    Sire and Dam:
Happy Tailz FR Sure Shot X x Happy Tailz Zip SunT

    Sire's Sire and Dam:
Caesar's Villa FZ First Rate +*S x Happy Tailz Zip Specialty

    Dam's Sire and Dam:
MCH Caesar's Villa GD Zipper *S x Happy Tailz Glittering Sunset

    Oxford Kid and Lamb Brennagh

This is Brennagh (Brenna). She was born on 30 April 2009. She is a very large dwarf goat and hopefully she still meets size requirements. Unfortunately, she has vestigial teats (four teats total) so she can not be shown, although that trait has not shown up in her siblings or ancestors, so we're hoping she does not pass it onto her kids. She is our calmest on the milk stand by far, and her large teats make milking her go very quickly, sometimes one pint in under three minutes. We hope she will be one of those fabled Nigerians who produces a half-gallon a day.

In 2010, she had buck twins, sold as wethers. In 2011, she had quads but only two bucks survived, to be sold as wethers. We plan to retain a daughter from her in 2012.

2012 Pictures from left to right:

  • Full udder at twelve hours past last milking
  • Empty udder (post-milking)
  • Profile shot
  • Here is her pedigree:

    Sire and Dam:
Irish Whisper Indiana Jones x Irish Whisper RC Dazed

    Sire's Sire and Dam:
Velvet Acres Itty Bitty Indy x Sunn Vista Molasses *D

    Dam's Sire and Dam:
Irish Whisper Raisin' Cain AI x Irish Whisper Passionat Kisses

    Happy Tailz TW A Caoilainn

This is Caoilainn (Kay-lynn). She was born on 17 March 2010. She is a very friendly and active little doe. We are very excited to have her and her genetics in our herd. She is also Aibhilin's half-sister (same dam). She was a decent milker in 2011 in terms of temperament and milk weight, but her teats could be larger. She has decent attachment. Hopefully, she will give a quart a day at peak in 2012.

She gave us one daughter, which we retained, in a difficult kidding in 2011. We plan to keep another daughter from her in 2013 or 2014, sired by another buck.

    Sire and Dam:
Hoosier Heart CK Tweed x Happy Tailz Zip SunT

    Sire's Sire and Dam:
Hoosier Heart Chess King x Gay-Mor's Lucky Paisley

    Dam's Sire and Dam:
MCH Caesar's Villa GD Zipper *S x Happy Tailz Glittering Sunset

    Oreo

Oreo is a black and white, unregistered doe born in April 2010. She came to us as a trade for a wether. She's very skittish around people, but is actually very calm and still on the milk stand, once you get her on the stand, that is. We'll sell all of her kids as pets and not keep any, as unregistered does don't play into our breeding plans. She may be for sale after she kids in 2012 as either a lactating or dry doe. She is a very good milker; it's a shame she isn't registerable.

    Irish Whisper PPS Deirdre

Born on 1 November 2010. She usually goes by "Dee-Dee". We are very excited to have her in our herd as well. She promises to have large, easily milkable teats and excellent conformation. We were able to breed her in fall 2011, and as of 26 February, she looks to be the size to have at least twins. We will hopefully retain a daughter from her in 2012 and if not, definitely in 2013.

    Sire and Dam:
Irish Whisper YS Popparazzi x Irish Whisper Tommy Girl

    Sire's Sire and Dam:
MI Sugarcreek XC Yippy Skippy x Irish Whisper W Soda Pop

    Dam's Sire and Dam:
Irish Whisper RB Black Jack x Irish Whisper Workin' Girl

    Hetrick IND B Endellion

Born on 30 March 2011. She usually goes by "Delly". This little girl was the runt of the litter (Caoilainn) but she worked her way into our hearts. Plus, she was the only doe we would have been able to keep from the 2011 litters. She is also the only doe that Indy sired for us before his unexpected death in Fall 2011. She is growing rather slowly so will not be bred until Fall 2012, even though our usual practice is to breed their first winter if their size is appropriate. We anticipate that she will always be small, but hopefully have decent milking volume.

    Last updated 26 February 2012.
